PSD Tutorial: Making A Person Look Gothic Or A Vampire

Are you obsessed with vampires? Unsurprising. Since the release of Twilight, there have been hundreds of books and graphic novels almost duplicating the literature. You most likely even noticed the release of the caricature parody called "Vampires Suck" - a movie dedicated to retaliating against the growing popularity of the Twilight Series. Anyway, the special effects used to create the pale, creepy, yet sexy Edward and Alice Cullen are widely popular right now, so being a Twilight fan myself, I decided to give it a go. I may do another tutorial with fangs in the future.

If you don't have Photoshop, or you want to upgrade to the new CS5.5 Version, take a look at the Adobe Special Offers from the Adobe Store. If you're new to Photoshop, we have some beginner articles and basic tips coming very soon for some of the lesser established designers, which teaches you how to use the basic features of Photoshop, such as Blending Modes, Layer Styles, Text Tools, Cropping/Slicing, Image Adjustments, Brushing, Filters and Photoshop Actions.

Photoshop Tutorial Step 1: Dyeing The Hair Red

1.1. Pick a decent quality photo, open up your Photoshop, then press Q.
1.2. Pick an appropiate brush from the brush tool selection and go over the hair (it is red by default).
1.3. Press Q again to capture your selection. From the menu, go to Select » Inverse (Shift + Ctrl + I).
1.4. From the menu, go to Layer » New » Layer (Ctrl + Shift + N).
1.5. Fill the selection with your desired hair colour. Change the Blending Mode to Soft Light.
1.6. From the menu, go to Image » Adjustments » Hue/Saturation to make any necessary changes to the colour.
1.7. Press Ctrl + A to make sure the whole hair layer is selected, then switch back to the original layer and adjustments again.
1.8. My advice is to minimize the Brightness, and maximize the Contrast from Brightness/Contrast.

Photoshop Tutorial Step 2: Skin, Eyes And Lip Colouring

2.1. I've coloured the skin Pale White. Just follow the same steps as described in Step 1 and don't go over the eyes and lips.
2.2. Do the same again for the eyes, and experiment with different overlays until you get something realistic.
2.3. For the lips and eye shadow or eyeliner, don't use any overlays, only brush black and lower the opacity.
2.4. Now, clean up with soft brush to erase the edges a little - it will make the image appear a little more realistic.
2.5. Do this on all the necessary layers and then merge all visible layers with Shift + Ctrl + E.
2.6. Make the background black, this should be simple enough.

Photoshop Tutorial Step 3: Dried Blood Effect With A Photoshop Brush

3.1. With the Blood Brush on a seperate layer, Edit » Transform » Scale, Rotate or Flip; whatever you feel is necessary.
3.2. If it doesn't quite seem how you want it to yet, then use the 46 Spatter brush and erase over the blood slightly.
3.3. Not too much, lower the brush opacity to 80%. With Image » Adjustments, alter the colour or contrast if you need to.
3.4. Merge All (CTRL + E), and then Duplicate that layer (CTRL + J). Filter » Blur » Gaussian Blur - make the radius 2px.
3.5. Alter the Blending Mode to Soft Light, change the Opacity to 25% and Merge All. Duplicate the layer again.
3.6. Add a Filter » Noise » Add Noise with a 30%, Uniform, Monochromatic setting.
3.7. Add a Blur » Motion Blur with 30px at a 0-Degree Angle.
3.8. Alter the Blending Mode to Soft Light, the Opacity to 50%, and then duplicate 4 or 5 times.
3.9. Also, you could lower the Saturation by 20 if you wanted - on the final merged image.
